Effective Delegation
Delegate outcomes and authority appropriately — without abdication or micromanagement.
Learning objectives
- 1.Identify tasks suitable for delegation
- 2.Delegate with clarity on mandate, resources, and reporting
- 3.Monitor delegated work without suffocating ownership
Why managers under-delegate
Fear of quality loss, guilt about workload, enjoyment of substantive work, and distrust after bad experiences. Under-delegation caps team capacity and stalls your own development into strategic leadership.
The delegation checklist
When delegating, specify:
- Outcome expected (not just task steps)
- Authority level (recommend vs. decide vs. implement)
- Resources available (time, budget, people)
- Constraints and non-negotiables
- Reporting rhythm and escalation triggers
- Learning purpose (if developmental delegation)
Accountability remains yours
Delegating execution does not delegate accountability to the institution. You remain responsible for outcomes. If a delegatee fails, examine whether you delegated clearly enough, provided support, or chose the wrong person for the task.
Key takeaways
- ★Delegate outcomes and authority bands, not vague 'help with this'
- ★Match monitoring intensity to experience and stakes
- ★Accountability stays with the manager even when work is delegated
